The Effect of Social Media on SEO

There is no doubt that Social Media Marketing has become one of the best option when I comes to online promotions. It’s no surprise because social media has the capacity to attract more readers and create more quality backlinks for a website. Earlier last 2011, major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing have revealed that social media links coming from Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants have a direct effect on a website’s rankings. Yes, links shared through Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and etc. have a great and noticeable effect on rankings.

Conventional Thinking!

We all know that links coming from social networks are “no follow”, thus it have no effect on the rankings of a website. From my previous blog post written by Susanne Myers, she described a “no follow” link as a “link that works just like any other one, but it is not considered in the search algorithm.” It means that a nofollow backlink does not send out link juice and the anchor text that was used does not help the page to rank higher.

Social Signals

So the logic here is simple, if an article gets retweeted on Twitter many times and is shared on Facebook by a lot of users, then Google and other huge search engines uses it as a sign of popularity. This is also called “social signals”. So the bigger the social signal a website gets then Google will rank the website higher in search queries. What do I mean again? It generally means that if the articles on your site or blog is not shared or retweeted by people in social networks, it will simply perform less well in search engines than articles that do get shared in social networks.

Does This Change the Game?

No, I think it’s the sensible and natural progress of SEO. But it does create a complete and comprehensive strategy in internet marketing wherein social media, links, and blogs and of course: the content works together to improve the website’s overall ranking on search engines.

The Bottom Line

If there is one factor that maintains this whole thing together it’s your “content”. All you need to do is to post relevant and useful articles that individuals would want to read and share.

At the end, your customers and leads will then discover you through search engines, via your Facebook fan page, through the articles you post on blogs and article directories, the tweets you tweet on Twitter, your press releases and the video clips you post on YouTube.

Keep in your mind that: “You Are What You Publish!”
